About Gretchen Lyons

I am a tutor with over 20 years of professional experience. Before moving with my family to Columbus from Chicago in 2023, I built my career in education tutoring over 100 private students, working with more than 500 students in test prep classes, teaching humanities courses at City Colleges of Chicago, and serving as a senior administrator in The University of Chicago's undergraduate college. After a three-year career break caring for my family, I established GHL Tutoring Columbus with the aim of providing exceptional, individualized, in-person tutoring to students across the Columbus area.

My own academic training is anchored by a rich liberal arts education that cultivated both sides of my brain. I am an aspiring Renaissance Woman who treasures art, music, and literature but also loves to solve a differential equation, should it come her way. My degrees are in the arts: I have a BA in art theory and practice from Northwestern University, an MFA in studio art from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an MA in humanities from The University of Chicago. My dedication to the humanistic tradition perseveres in my work, my parenting, my personal goals, and even, I contend, my cooking.

What I value most in my professional life are the opportunities I have to work with incredibly diverse populations of students, from gifted, urban sixth-graders prepping for the PSAT to ambitious, college-bound teens to working parents reading Marx for the first  time. Encountering varied perspectives and convictions has been formative in my teaching: I actively listen to each student, aiming to understand their learning process, strengths, challenges, and goals. From there, I adapt my approach to fit the student's needs, and I continuously assess progress. My goal is to nurture curiosity and cultivate skills that will sustain life-long learning. These are aptitudes that outlive any test score.

I live in Worthington with my husband and our very rambunctious daughters, Amelia (8) and Helena (4). I love what Columbus has to offer family life and still marvel at how I can get anywhere in the city in about twenty minutes. When I am not modeling DNA strands with marshmallows and toothpicks, I enjoy running, reading, drawing, and being outdoors. My favorite book is Anna Karenina. My favorite city is Rome. My favorite food is kale. My favorite animal is the pink fairy armadillo. The soundtrack from K-Pop Demon Hunters is really growing on me.

Concrete Results

By setting specific goals, regularly evaluating progress, responding and adapting to learning cues, and cultivating engagement through one-on-one instruction, I expect the very best from my students. Parents and students can expect the same from me.

Structure & Assessment

Programs as well as session-by-session tutoring follow a clear trajectory, defined by the student's goals. We track performance week to week, and I provide regular reports assessing progress.

Custom Curriculum

A unique curriculum is developed for each student, based on their particular needs and goals. I customize the content, style, and pacing of each program to promote growth and engagement.

Humanized
Instruction

I respond to each student's learning cues and adapt my approach--augmenting, reinforcing, or shifting gears completely based on my understanding of the student's needs. I'm ready to pick up what i-Ready leaves to be desired.

In-Person Engagement

I meet with students face-to-face, at a mutually convenient, Columbus-area library. In-person engagement with few distractions helps students focus and strengthens the student-tutor connection.
